Ancient Tree Forum are a

UK charity who seek to secure the long term future of ancient trees through advocacy, research, conservation and promotion.

The Challenge

Ancient Tree Forum approached us to fully redesign their brand identity and website. Their existing logo and site were dated and they wanted something more modern that would more effectively appeal to their diverse target audience including; the general public, ancient tree enthusiasts, scientific communities and central government. The new website needed to be flexible and easy-to-update as well as being responsive to work across desktop, tablet and mobile.

Our Approach

We worked closely with their new Development Officer to come up with a brand identity and website design that would really engage their key users, and that ATF would feel truly represented their work. We extensively planned the site functionality to create a structure that would make the high number of information pages as intuitive to use as possible.

The Results

To keep within the charity's budget we chose to create a simple boxy layout that looks clean, informative and trustworthy, with strong use of photos. We carried through the new branding and earthy colours of the logo, creating a balance between the heritage nature of the work whilst being contemporary. The responsive site was then built by our Developers using Wordpress as an easy-to-use Content Management System, with added custom code and plug-ins to support our bespoke design theme.

The new logo illustrates a specifically ancient tree and uses a genuinely old typeface to communicate a feeling of age and heritage. The brand identity and website were extremely well received by their large governing committee, who feel it represents exactly what they stand for.

Ongoing Aims

We also created a bespoke responsive e-newsletter template that ATF update through Mailchimp, and we recently added an events booking system to the site.

For ages we’ve talked about needing an easy to navigate, high-quality website that communicates information well and reflects our impassioned views, and I think you’ve done it. Given our diverse headstrong group, the re-design (as with the new logo) was bound to be tricky. I think the way you’ve managed both is quite an achievement."
